What Electrical Items Should You Consider When Installing a Pool in Ontario?
Thinking of installing a pool in your backyard? Awesome choice! Whether it’s for cooling off in the summer, entertaining guests, or just creating your dream outdoor oasis, a swimming pool is a great addition to any home. But – before you dive in – you need to think beyond the water and into the wiring.
In Ontario, pool installations come with very specific electrical safety requirements. These rules aren’t just red tape – they’re there to protect your family, your property, and ensure everything runs smoothly for years to come.
Always remember that water and electricity don’t mix!
Here’s a practical breakdown of the electrical items you need to consider when installing a pool in Ontario:
1. Grounding & Bonding: Your First Line of Defense
Proper grounding and bonding are essential for pool safety. This isn’t optional – it’s required by the Ontario Electrical Safety Code (OESC).
- Bonding: All metal parts (like ladders, handrails, light niches, etc.) must be bonded together. Even the rebar in your concrete!
- Grounding: All electrical components (pumps, heaters, lighting) must be properly grounded.
- In some cases, a bonding grid around the pool deck is required to eliminate voltage differences that could lead to electric shock.
2. GFCI Protection: No Exceptions
Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) are lifesavers – literally. These devices detect even the smallest imbalance in electrical current and shut off power in milliseconds.
You’ll need GFCI protection for:
- Pool pumps
- Underwater lighting
- Heaters or saltwater chlorinators
- All outlets within 3.5–5 meters of the water

Make sure any existing circuits are upgraded if they don’t already have GFCI protection.
3. Pool Pumps & Timers
Your pool pump will likely be one of the most power-hungry components and has its own requirements:
- Must be on a dedicated circuit, often 240V.
- Needs to be GFCI protected and properly bonded.
- If using a timer or automation system, it must be installed and wired according to code.
4. Pool & Landscape Lighting
Lighting adds both safety and ambiance to your pool space – but it must be installed carefully:
- Underwater lighting must be pool-rated and GFCI protected.
- Low-voltage systems are popular and require transformers rated for wet locations.
- Landscape and path lighting should be considered for visibility and security.
5. Outdoor Outlets (Receptacles)
Ontario code requires all outdoor outlets to be GFCI-protected:
- Must have in-use weatherproof covers
- Must be more than than 1.5 meters from the water’ edge
- Ideal for plugging in vacuums, tools, or even outdoor speakers
6. Heater or Saltwater Chlorinator
If you’re adding a heater or saltwater system, these also require:
- A dedicated GFCI-protected circuit
- Proper bonding and grounding
- Weatherproof installation and compliant enclosures
7. Control Panels & Automation
Smart pool? You’ll need a pool automation panel that controls pumps, lights, and heaters – all of which must be:
- Installed in a dry, protected area
- Properly grounded and bonded
- Compliant with local electrical codes
8. Wiring & Conduit Requirements
For all buried wiring, follow these requirements:
- Use wet-rated cable (like RW90 or Teck90)
- Install in PVC conduit or liquid-tight flexible conduit
- Respect minimum burial depths (usually 18 to 24 inches depending on cable type and location)
9. Don’t Forget: ESA Inspection Is Mandatory
In Ontario, all pool electrical work must be inspected by the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA). It’s not just a suggestion – it’s the law.
A Tip From Dr. Watt: Always hire a licensed electrical contractor familiar with pool installations. They’ll handle permits, inspections, and ensure your setup is safe and code-compliant.
Wrapping It All Up
Installing a pool is a big project but getting the electrical right is one of the most important (and overlooked) steps. A properly installed electrical system ensures safety, reliability, and peace of mind for years to come.
Before you cannonball into your new backyard paradise, make sure your wiring is just as solid as your landscaping!
