ASK DR. WATT

Q: When should you test your GFCI Receptables?

A: You should test your GFCI Receptacles once a month!

What’s that, you say? We-re glad you asked. It’s the outlet with the buttons on it, often in your bathroom or kitchen.

Reset button: If the button is out, push it back in and power should be restored.

Test button: Give it a push. The reset button should pop out, cutting power – just push the reset button back in to get it working again.

Things that should make you say “Hmmm…”:

  1. Tripping Breakers – if it happens more than once, there’s something going on. Let us know.
  2. The Mystery “Burning Smell” – This one can be nerve-inducing. Give us a call… and relax.
  3. Getting zapped? – If a switch, receptacle, or appliance is giving you the occasional shock… that’s NOT normal. Let us help.
  4. Aluminum Wiring – A lot is said about this stuff… some true… some not so much. It’s a good idea to have it looked at by the pros.
  5. Ungrounded Outlets – We call them “receptacles”, but you get it. Older homes often have the old “Two-prong” outlets. We recommend updating them if you do.
  6. Something not working – We hear you saying “Well, duh!” But, seriously… if a switch, receptacle, fixture or appliance suddenly stops working, it’s worth troubleshooting to prevent bigger problems.
  7. Flickering – Nowadays, it could be as simple as a failing fluorescent or LED bulb. But we recommend that you be sure. Give your Nu-Tek Electrician a ring!
  8. Plug Not Staying In – Electrical receptacles are like us… sometimes old parts wear out a bit. If a plug just won’t stay put, it’s time to replace the outlet.
  9. Power Surge – The average home has $8000 worth of electrical devices… and ONE power surge can wipe out your investment. Check out our page on Surge Protection.
  10. Power Bars and Extension Cords – Sure they work, but at what cost? Many times… safety. Let Nu-Tek help you get power to where you need it, the SAFE way!

ASK DR. WATT

Q: What happens if HALF of the house power suddenly goes out?

A: If HALF your house power suddenly goes out, check the electricity meter coming in:

  • If you CAN’T read any numbers, there is likely a problem with the grid. Contact your utility.
  • If you CAN read the numbers on the meter, the problem is in your home. Get help from Nu-Tek right away!
